Pillars of the Earth

Author: Ken Follet
ISBN: 0451207149
Pages: 973

One word summary: AMAZING

Okay, my sister recommended this book to me. She said its the best book she has ever read.. We usually have a slight difference in the types of books we like. But I figured if she loved it might just like it.

Description from Barnes and Noble: The Pillars of the Earth sweeps through four decades of 12th Century England drawing the listener into the raw, flamboyant middle ages. It is a shining saga of good and evil, treachery and intrigue, violence and beauty. Not-so-noble knights, righteous heroes, valiant heroines and both virtuous and immoral men of God highlight this story. They manipulate, and are in turn manipulated by, the political turmoil and unrest between the reigns of Henry I and Henry II.

My review: I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a suspenseful, action packed book. I loved all the characters in the book, cheered for the good guys and booed the bad guys. Follett definately kept me turning pages. I would say this is one of the best books I have ever read.

Fever and Swollen Hand

Well yesterday was a tough day for Sammy. I put him down for an afternoon nap (usually 2 hours tops).. after 3 hours I could hear him in his room moaning and groaning. So I went in to check on him. He felt really hot. I got him out of his crib changed his diaper and took his temperature.. It was 103.3. I gave him some Tylenol and I called the pediatrician's office they said they wanted to see him since the flu and strep throat were going around.

Luckily it is not the flu or strep. He has an ulcer in the back of his throat and a viral infection. They said keep giving him Tylenol and Motrin (on a rotation) until his fever breaks. They said if his fever hasn't broken by Monday then bring him back in. They also said if he gets worse or anything like that to bring him back in!

So Tim got home from class and we got Sammy all ready for bed. He was crawling on the floor near the sliding glass door when he started screaming. He was holding his right hand up in the air and it was shaking a little. I looked on the floor to a wasp.

Sammy was stung on his ring finger on his right hand. Poor kid can't seem to catch a break. So after talking to Karla about that she said to have him play in ice water and give him some liquid Benadyl to keep the swelling down. So we let Sammy play in Tipsy's water dish (which we never let him do).. he had fun grabbing ice cubes and feeding them to the dog. I ran out to the grocery store and picked up some Benadryl. We gave him a dosage of that and put him to bed.

Sammy slept through the night like a champ. We didn't wake him up to give him pain medicine.. we figured if he felt bad enough he would wake us up (we had the monitor on). This morning his fever was 102 so we gave him some more pain medicine. Sammy and I spent the morning on the couch watching cartoons (another thing we don't let him do :-P) and is now down for his morning nap.

Sammy's first Easter

Sammy had a lot of fun on his first Easter. We went to church then drove to my parents and had an Easter egg hunt and dinner.

Here is Sammy's basket half empty after him pulling stuff out:

My sister is so cool and got that basket for him. Isn't it adorable! He also had a ton of fun shaking the Easter eggs. He would get them open and stick whatever was inside right in his mouth. This included things that were still wrapped :-P Note to self for next year, un-wrap the candies before putting them in the eggs ;-)

My parents got the two grandsons toddler swings. They hung them up under their deck so they can swing with a nice view of the lake.

Easter dinner was delicious!! We had all the traditional stuff with a few new things! Sammy liked everything he tried including the asparagus (hmm def. Tim's son).

You can check out more easter pictures in the March album.

Sammy is a Toddler!!

Well Sammy started walking tonight. He has been taking a couple of steps here and there. But tonight he took about 15 steps. He also pulled up on a chair and walked over to the sliding glass door to look at Tipsy outside.

When Tim got home from class we got a video of him taking a few steps towards his dump truck. You can check it out here.

There are some more videos in that album of him walking and playing with his stuffed toys. I just cant over how fast he is growing up! We have a toddler on our hands.

Frontier Culture Museum

Today I went to the Frontier Culture Museum with the Rankin's and Katie's Family. I had a lot of fun looking at the different houses they had recreated and rebuilt there. They had people dressed up in period clothes that could tell you a lot about the houses and the era.

Since it we are now in the spring when we got to the German exhibit we were just in time for the burning wheel to be rolled down the hill. Apparently there was a tradition of doing this in Europe where they rolled a wheel with burning wheat down a hill towards the fields. When the wheel stopped that farm was suppose to have a good crop that year.

I enjoyed the Irish exhibit the best, maybe because I am Irish, but I thought the thatched roofs were really neat!

I will have to see if I can snag some pictures from Katie when she gets them on her computer hint hint ;-)

Gave the blog a face lift

Well my plain jane blog was getting old.. So today I gave it a face lift! Let me know what you think :-)

Happy St. Patrick's Day

Happy St. Patrick's Day

Our little Irish baby had fun dressing up in green clothes today! You can check out more photos here.

On the verge of walking

(he is wet because he played in the dog water before we caught him :-P)

Sammy has really learned to balance well the past few weeks. He can now stand (without holding on to anything) for a long period of time. Every now and then he will take a step (sometimes two) before he realizes what he is doing. Once he does he drops down on his knees and starts crawling.
(right before bed time)

This weekend we got him to take a big step for a piece of chocolate chip cookie. He then dropped on his knees to crawl the rest of the way for the piece of cookie. Tim said that he was drooling he wanted the cookie so bad. So maybe I need to entice him with a full cookie.. hehe

Menu Plan Monday

Here is my meal plan for the week:

Monday: Honey Mustard Tilapia, rice, and steamed vegetables
Tuesday: Sunday Chicken Dinner (yes that's the name of it) in the crock pot
Wednesday: Roast Beef and potatoes in the crock-pot
Thursday: We have biblestudy this night and we eat there
Friday: Dijon Pork Chops

You can check out other menu plans here.

Snaggle Tooth

For a while now Sammy has had one of his top teeth. The other looked like it was going to pop through any day.. however, this was almost a month ago when I first thought this.

We had nicknamed him snaggle tooth since he only had one of his front teeth!
(you can see it just below his upper lip in this picture)

Well today we noticed that the other one has finally popped through some.. So soon the nickname will be no more.. but we had fun while it lasted :-D

Chocolate Chip Cookie

I made home made chocolate chip cookies today. We let Sammy have half of a cookie and he LOVED it! He kept asking for more cookie!

You can check out more photos here!

Date Night

Last night Tim and I dropped Sammy off at a friends house to be watched. We are going to trade off watching their little girl another night. We went to barnes and noble and got coffee and perused through the books with out handing a baby back and forth and keeping him entertained.

Then we went over to the movie theater and watched Vantage Point. The movie was really action packed and kept you guessing what was going to happen in each vantage point. Since we did not have to pay a baby sitter we even splurged and got popcorn and soda. Next we went out for an appetizer and coffee.

We enjoyed our night out with out Sammy but wouldn't trade the typical days for the world!

Sammy's Ears

So I realized that I had not updated everyone on Sammy's ears. We went to the peditrician on Tuesday and got the all clear on his ears. One ear still had some fluid but it was clear and could last for a week or two.

We also discussed Sammy's dislike of the sippy cup. He said well one day soon you will just have to go cold turkey with no bottle. Tim and I discussed it and said Wednesday was as good as any. The pediatrician said their desire to drink is so strong that if he is thirsty he will eventually drink from the sippy cup. Well around 4:30 pm Wednesday afternoon Sammy had maybe 10 sips of formula/water from the sippy cup. We called into the office and they said if he hasnt had anything to drink all day then maybe he is not ready.. So Sammy still hates the sippy cup and probably thinks we are mean mean people for trying for force him to drink from it :-P

Spring Reading Thing 2008

I was reading through some of the blogs I subscribe to in Google Reader and I came across this post over at Callapidder Days. The basic idea is that you pick books that you want to read this spring. The Spring Reading Thing goes from March 20th through June 19th. You can pick whatever books you would like. This can also include books you want to read out loud to your kids.

I am going to start working on the list of books that I want to read this spring and put a post with my goals for the Spring Reading Thing 2008.

Update on Sammy's ears

We went to the pediatrician Tuesday afternoon for a recheck of his ears. His left ear was doing much better however the right ear was still infected pretty bad. They switched his antibiotic to a stronger one. So hopefully that will nip this thing in the bud. We go back on Tuesday for a recheck to see if that right ear is cleared up any.

The other house projects

I was on the phone yesterday with my dad, he noticed that I blogged about the swing set we repainted and he was feeling a little left out. He said man I thought those new cabinets would be up for everyone to look at (he was kidding of course). But in order to not hurt my father's feelings and to keep him happy so he continues to want to help us with projects around the house.. I bring you the painted bathrooms:

The Guest Bathroom
(Yes, Sammy is playing in the tub fully dressed with no water.. that is how much he LOVES the tub!)

The Master Bathroom

So, you might now be wondering where we picked up these wonderful colors for our bathrooms. They happen to be relics of the past from previous rooms at my parents house. My parents have a wide selection of color options that they have used in their other houses. The best part: these cans came at a discounted price. They only cost us a couple cans of Diet Coke and laughing at my dad's jokes!

But the best project that my dad and Tim completed over the past weekend was the new cabinets they installed in my laundry room. I now have tons of storage space and the room looks more like a room than a closet.
So thanks Dad for all your hard work and thanks Mom for coming over and keeping Sammy and I company while the guys were working. We love you!

If you would like to see some more shots from these household projects check out the March Album.

Swing Set

This weekend we worked on getting Sammy's swing set sanded and painted. We got the main part of the swing set completed with the help from Aunt Nicia.

Tim did most of the sanding to remove any rust spots on it. Then Nicia and I roughed up the rest and I spray painted it silver. Nicia helped with some of the sanding with the drill and some spray painting. She also helped to keep Sammy and Tipsy entertained :-PWe celebrated the finish project with Sammy's first time on a swing.
We then also got to play some Wii and two games of Clue! You can check out some more pictures here.
