Word of the Year

I never really understood when people would pick a word to be their theme for the year.  I didn’t understand how one word could be a theme for a whole year.  How could one word represent so much that we hoped the new year would hold.  Then I was reading All of a Kind Family’s post about her 2012 word and something clicked.  Not only did I finally understand I had a word come to me out of no where.

My word for 2012 is persevere.  I feel like in the last year when things got tough I gave up.  When things got busy I let the not so fun tasks go.  When I was tired or sick I gave up.  This year I hope to persevere and push myself.  Push my self to do better, try harder, and not give up!

New and Old Goals

Last year I made 5 goals for myself.  I accomplished 3 out of the 5 goals.  Here were the goals from last year:

  1. Read through the whole bible with Tim – Really sad I didn’t accomplish this!  I am making this a priority for next year!
  2. Do a better job maintaining a clean house – This was a hard task to measure.  I think I need smaller weekly goals in this area and hold myself accountable with making this happen.
  3. Improve my sewing and knitting skills – I improved a ton with my knitting.  My sewing was coming along until my sewing machine broke.  I hope to continue to improve both of these skills
  4. Continue to read 2 books a month (but make a few non fiction books) I read a ton last year.. I didn’t however do a good job of keeping track of what I read.  I hope to set monthly goals in this area and write down everything I read Smile
  5. Pay off first snowball and get very close or pay off second snowball. – done!  I hope to accomplish the 2nd pay off this year!

Now for this years goals!  I am listing a few more goals for this year.  I also plan on posting about my goals at the beginning of each month.  I hope this holds me accountable and gives me a better opportunity to think about my goals throughout the year (not just the beginning and end of the year).

  1. Try 12 new DIY tasks (one for each month).  I am finishing up my list of things I want to try in 2012 but you can see a sneak peak on pintrest.
  2. Pay off 2nd snowball in the summer
  3. Create a 6 month emergency fund
  4. Read through the whole bible
  5. Go through the 2012 Declutter & Organize Calendar
  6. Read 2 books a month
  7. Do project 365 and post the pictures from each day (I will be posting a week worth of pictures at a time)
  8. Set month goals for cleaning in hopes to create habits in areas I struggle to maintain
  9. Meal plan more consistently
  10. Revamp coupons and get motivated to save money couponing

Cookie Decorating Fun

Sammy and I made a big batch of sugar cookies and invited some friends over to decorate them!  We gave each of the kids some cookies and some icing.  Then they got to pick which sprinkles they wanted to use (which happened to be all of them *wink*).  When we were all finished they got to eat one of their creations!

We setup the table in the kitchen so I could just sweep up the spilled sprinkles!  Super easy cleanup! So glad we had friends come over and do this with us!  Love you guys!

Preschool Corner–Gingerbread Baby

Last week we did a gingerbread baby theme! Sammy loves this book and the printables that Jolanthe made to go along with the book were a huge hit!

We read through the book several times during the week. Here Sammy is pointing out some of the animals (he has food in his mouth):

He LOVED putting the gingerbread baby in the gingerbread house (yes he is wearing a Halloween shirt doing Christmas activities.. thankfully you can’t see his mismatched pants in these pictures Winking smile):

‘Reading’ the Eat a Ginger Bread baby book:

Being a goof.. We hadn’t done size sorting in a while so I printed that out to make sure he still knew how to do it. Sammy is wearing his super cute gingerbread boy shirt my Mom made him!

Matching the pattern I made (we did several rounds of this):

We found all of the animals in the book and put them in order:

We played a competitive game of candyland (it might be the first time I have ever won that game):

Then using the candyland pieces we played the Gingerbread Baby board game:

We have plans to make a gingerbread house and some gingerbread boys and girls. Those will fall into our 31 days of Christmas activities.

O Christmas Tree

We had the pleasure of going to a little tree farm close to our house again this year to cut down our Christmas tree. Sammy had so much fun looking for the perfect tree.. he actually pointed out several real great tress. A few were too big for what we wanted but they looked great. Love this picture of my guys off looking for the perfect tree:

We found the tree! A little small and just perfect for the space we wanted to put it:

Cutting down the tree:

This picture melts my heart.. he was a little intimidated at first but he got in there to help cut it down:

Who Doesn’t Love

…a good book. I’m not sure either. I do know that I am always on the look-out for some fun books to read with Sammy. Recently, I got three new books in the mail by a new author who is also a good bloggy friend of mine! I am breaking my “no giveaways on the blog” rule, because I couldn’t not give away one of her amazing books! Terra sent me an email a few months ago saying that she started a company and had written some books. She wanted to know if I would like to read them and give one away.

I have been reading Terra’s personal blog for a long time now. Her posts are witty, funny, and down to earth. She is an amazing mom of two super sweet and absolutely adorable girls. I knew that if she wrote some kids books they would be amazing. I was not disappointed when I received her first three books!

You can go check out each of these books and the company on her book company’s website. I will wait for you to come back…go check out Campbell Lawson! Did you go?… really I can wait, I promise!

Welcome back… isn’t her logo adorable? So, we have been reading these books for a while now, and I love them more and more each time I read them! My favorite book is Somebody. The book is about a girl that doesn’t want to just be somebody but learns an important lesson about being somebody!

CL OwlMsthd Green F

Whereitgo? is Sammy’s favorite book. He loves searching the pages for the missing objects… I love it, because it reminds me so much of Sammy. He is a little bit messy and can’t find things even when they are right in front of him…do you have a kid like that?

After saying that, we didn’t not like Rock n’ Friend. I loved that it was two stories built into one book! Sammy thought it was really fun to turn the book over and read it back the other direction! The story is super cute, and reminds me a lot of myself as a child!

Now for the super cool part! I am giving away a copy of one of her books! Not only that, it will be a signed copy of the book! What a special gift to give to a child in your life! So what do you need to do to be entered? Just leave me a comment with which book you would like to win and why. The giveaway will be open until Saturday December 10th at 8:00 AM (EST).
