2014 Goals–Final Update

2014 Goals

So I did a terrible job of posting updates on my goals.  I also didn’t complete all of them (I kinda figured I wouldn’t) but I am proud of how many I completed and how far I got on the others!  I am going to post some goals for 2015 tomorrow but here is what I was able to accomplish in 2014.

1. Read 12 non-fiction books (affiliate links below)

2. Read 12 fiction books (affiliate links below)
3. Read through the whole bible chronologically
4. Work out 204 times this year
5. Complete 3 knitting projects – I only completed 2 projects and have one 3/4 of the way finished
6. Complete 3 DIYs (any type) (we completed the floors, shelves, and a place to display subway art)
7. Add 20 things to our emergency preparedness kit – totally failed on this one.  We added 5 things to our kit)
8. Purge through each area of our house (There are 16 “areas” of our house to go through at least once)
9. Print 2 years worth of pictures (I must get caught up) – I printed 1 year and have the other ready to print I am just waiting for a free shipping code *winks*
10. Create 1 photo album per year from 2007 to now (put the rest of the pictures into picture boxes)
11. Invite someone over to dinner at least once a month
12. Add 500 things to my thankful list on the blog – failed miserably!
13. Read aloud 24 chapter books with Sammy
14. Try 60 new recipes (I will post them or share a link when we try them, that’s 5 a month) – I only tried about 30
15. Try 12 new homemade cleaning recipes (I will share a link or post them as I try them) – I got discouraged in this since so many of the ones I tried failed or didn’t perform up what I was trying to replace them with.

Sammy was Baptized!!

Back in October of this year, Tim and I received the most amazing gift and answer to prayer!  Sammy was baptized in front of our whole church.  Two years prior (to the day) Sammy accepted Jesus as his Savior.  In September, he told us he was ready to be baptized.

Our church does baptisms during the worship service.  We had a friend of ours record it for us.  You can watch the following video by entering the password “Sammy”.  The audio was overdriven (yes, our church is that loud) so the sound quality isn’t the best, but I am so thankful for the video!

Sammy's Baptism from bytesofmemory on Vimeo.

Tim had the pleasure of being in the baptismal with him and our good friend Brandon.  They asked him questions about his salvation and made sure he understood the importance of baptism as an act of obedience, and not a requirement for salvation:

Then they submerged him completely in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit:

We didn’t get a lot of pictures after the service but here are a few candid shots:

We then went back to our house to celebrate with our family and had an awesome lunch of chili.  We are so proud of Sammy’s decision and cannot wait to see what God has in store for his life!

This picture of Sammy was taken before the baptism with his buddies Eli and Noelle who were also getting baptized:

Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy

Two weeks ago Sammy went under the knife and had his tonsils and adenoids removed.  I wanted to share about the process for anyone who’s child is having this done.  I had a lot of questions that I couldn’t find the answers to about the actual process.  So hopefully this is helpful to someone else!

The night before the surgery Sammy requested Costco pizza and a smoothie.  We were happy to comply:

The next morning we were off to the hospital nice and early.  Which was a good thing since Sammy had to fast and was very hungry in the morning!  We got checked in and taken back to a pre-op room.

After we got all checked in Sammy had some great chill time with the iPad.  Then all of the doctors (surgeon and anesthesiologist) and nurse (the one that would roll him away) came in to introduce themselves.  Sammy did great and was very pleasant with everyone!

Sammy put on his gown and they attached his bracelets (one for his ID and one to let everyone know he has an allergy).  They did not start his IV before the procedure!

Then the time came to get wheeled out of the room.  He was able to take a comfort item with him and Baby Scratchy was happy to make the journey!! My biggest fear through the whole thing was the transition from hanging out with us to be rolled away to the operating room with out us.

2014-11-18 08.55.31

As he rolled away he was still laughing and joking with the nurse and we were off to the waiting room.  My biggest concern was not really a concern at all in the end!

2014-11-18 08.56.07

Thankfully it was not a long surgery!!  After about 25 minutes the surgeon came out to tell us everything had gone well!  Sammy did have one stitch because one tonsil area didn’t want to stop bleeding on it’s own.

The hardest part of the whole procedure came next…. the recovery room!  Sammy was so out of it and so upset and in pain.  It was not my favorite part of the event.  As I was getting back to the recovery area Sammy had some bleeding out of his nose.  This is fairly common but pretty scary to walk into the room and see blood on your child’s face and pillow.  After calming him down and getting him some pain medicine he was in much better shape.  Thankfully he mostly slept off the anesthesia, ate a popsicle and then we were released to go home!

2014-11-18 09.53.27-1

At home Sammy did great!  He drank Gatorade, ate more popsicles and watched TV:

Sammy had some visitors the first day and really loved the special attention!  Tim’s parents came over not long after we got home.  He was glad to see them!! While in the recovery area Sammy kept asking for his Aunt Reatha.  She happily came over for a short visit after she got off work.

2014-11-18 18.03.40

The next day we had some friends come over to visit and Sammy was able to calmly play with them.  He talked some when his friends were over and they had fun playing with some KEVA planks my parents had sent for him.  However, by that night he was not feeling the greatest.  Rachel and her boyfriend David came to visit and he was happy to see them but they were the first to witness his sluggishness, which is not a word anyone would ever use to describe Sammy.  That was his behavior for the next 3-4 days.  We were giving him pain medicine around the clock and all the mush food we could think of.  He lost weight, watched a lot of TV, and drank a lot of Gatorade!

Then his energy started to return and the need to be running and wild.  Unfortunately, he was not allowed to be physically active for two weeks!  This presented challenges of keeping him calm and entertained.  We played a TON of games, did science projects, and watched entirely to much NETFLIX.

This afternoon is Sammy’s last follow up appointment and hopefully he will be released to do everything!  If he is we are going to celebrate with Costco pizza because that is all Sammy has talked about for 2 weeks.  There are a few other foods he is really missing but that one is the highest on his list!

I hope this is helpful for someone else who’s child is having a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy!! If you have any questions please feel free to ask.  I will do my best to try and answer them.

Pumpkin Patch with Friends

Every year Sammy and I meet some buddies at the pumpkin patch that is really close to our house.  Last year they were out of the country, we brought the flat versions of them.  So we were super excited to hit the pumpkin patch  with them again this year!

Monthly School Review–September

Here is a little peak at a few things we did for school in September.  Sammy worked on spelling two syllable words with All About Spelling level 2.  We have slowed down a little in spelling to make sure he masters these skills:

2014-09-10 10.48.02

In math we worked on seeing that either way you write an addition sentence it makes the same number.  Below you can see an example of 4+3=7 and 3+4=7.

2014-09-11 08.45.39

We also worked on memorizing our doubles facts.  He would flip over a double and then find the solution in the X2 multiplication cards.  If he made a match he got to keep it:

2014-09-11 09.18.23

We also had some company while we were working on that *winks*

2014-09-11 09.18.28

Sammy started piano lessons this month.  After trying it for a few weeks we decide to wait a little while for him to mature.  He wasn’t loving it and the last thing we wanted to do was make him hate it!

2014-09-11 14.11.06

Sammy was sick with strep throat and we had a light school day with some Magic Treehouse learning:

2014-09-15 08.25.34

We have been having fun with the Picture Smart bible this year.  Sammy really loves it when we can add an extra item to the page (cotton ball, sand, twig, etc.):

Working on hundreds with our abacus and abacus cards.  Sammy thought this was a really fun lesson:

Down on the Beach Fun!

I didn’t take my nice camera down to the beach except when we did family pictures.  So here is the rest of the fun from our beach trip!  Leaving for the beach we left after Tim got off work and drove into the night:

I somehow didn’t get any pictures down at the pool.  We, however, spent almost every afternoon there enjoying the shade and playing games together.  The pool was a huge hit for our very independent swimmer!
